How to fix a torn bat wing

How to fix a torn bat wing

Thursday, 25/06/2009
From Australia: Food For Thought

A wildlife rescue officer says glue is better than stitches when it comes to mending the torn wings of flying foxes.

Lenaire Keatch, from Katherine in the Northern Territory, says the bat wings of flying foxes mend like skin on a human.

She says there are a lot more bats around for this time of year, particularly around the Tindal RAAF base, just outside Katherine.

Ms Keatch says the glue doesn't usually stop the bats from flying.

"If there's an extensive area that's damaged, they can have some scar tissue, but they tend to manage to balance themselves out after a bit of practice."

Local Northern New Jersey News Clips:

"For those who prefer to avoid having poison in their house and skeletons in their walls, there are alternatives. ''There are several traps on the market that are very effective,'' said Kirk La Pierre, owner of A-1 Saver Services, a wildlife control control company in Rutherford, N.J. ''But the kind of trap to use depends mostly on your attitude.''

One of the least expensive and most effective traps -- the glue-trap -- also happens to be the cruelest for its victims. A glue-trap, Mr. La Pierre said, is basically stiff piece of cardboard coated with glue. Bait is placed in the center of the trap -- an unshelled peanut with a drop of almond extract works best -- and the trap is placed on a floor or ledge next to the wall.

Mr. La Pierre, who is also the former president of the New Jersey Wildlife Damage Control Association, said that since a mouse trapped on a glue board can suffer considerably before it dies, it is usually preferable to use more humane ''snap traps'' that will kill instantly. Such traps, which come in easy-to-set plastic models as well as the standard wood-and-spring latch-type designs, should also be set along walls where mice meander, taking care to keep them out of reach of children and pets.

For those who prefer to evict the invaders rather than execute them, Mr. La Pierre said, there are a number of ''humane'' traps on the market. Such traps, he said, can be either single-occupancy devices that a mouse enters but cannot exit, or multiple-catch machines that catch and hold several mice without harming them. The problem with such traps, however, is disposing of the day's catch. "

"The number of squirrels in your house, however, is irrelevant. One or 50, you do not want these critters in your house. At the very least, squirrels love to gnaw on wires. I can personally testify to the damage squirrels can do, said Kirk La Pierre, who operates a wildlife control service here in Northern New Jersey".

"In Fair Lawn, N. J., a flock of some 200 birds has fouled ponds and beaches and brought traffic to a halt while crossing streets. Starting on Memorial Day, the townspeople began a full-scale offensive, using a $30,000 arsenal of goose hazing equipment, in an effort to rid the town of the honking gaggle. "They are so frustrated, they are taking it to extremes," says Kirk La Pierre of Saver Wildlife and National Goose Management, who runs the goose patrol. "

There are many pest control companies, but most deal with soley the extermination of insects or offer solutions with pesticides or other dangerous chemicals. However we deal strictly with wild animals, such as raccoon, skunk, opossum, birds, bats, coyotes and more. Urban Wildlife Services differs from your average exterminator business because we are both licensed and insured experts, and deal only with animals and birds. WE BELIEVE

Urban Wildlife Management believes in the majesty and sanctity of life in its many forms and we
acknowledge our responsibility to preserve this life and its supportive environment in all ways possible. That being said however, we also assert our chosen responsibility to attend to the health, safety and well-being of people and to the protection of their property from actual and potential damage caused by wild animals.
Conflicts between people and wild animals can be manifested in many ways. Some are simply annoying while others may be life-threatening. Urban Wildlife Management seeks to mitigate these conflicts in the most benign but effective methods available. Where conflict and damage can be anticipated, people can be educated and animals can be excluded to avoid possible conflicts. Where unavoidable or unforseen conflicts arise, swift intervention and remediation may be necessary to mitigate personal injury or property damage.
We believe that people have the right to feel safe and secure in their homes and in their communities and that they have the right to protect and defend their property against any perceived threat from wild animals violating these personal and property rights.
We believe in the preservation of animal welfare, protection of habitat, enforcement of animal cruelty laws and the peaceful co-existance with wildlife, but we do not believe wild animals have the right to threaten a person's safety, damage a person's house or other property, or to move in and become uninvited guests in ones' homes. We support the establishment of wildlife sanctuaries and we recognize the inviolability of people and their homes.
We believe that our customers have the right to expect the best possible service we can provide.
Services rendered should be efficient, effective and affordable. Products sold should be effective and reliable. Treatment of animals should be humane and professional.
